Tony has over thirty years experience in the energy industry, with the last fourteen at board level. His experience in the UK and on overseas power projects includes renewables, CHP, coal, oil, and nuclear, and encompasses commercial development, power and gas trading, contract negotiation, project financing, design, project management, production and engineering.
His early career included 20 years experience in the generation side of the power industry, holding positions in design, project management, production, and engineering. During that time he managed various projects in the UK in England and Scotland, and undertook a number of technical projects for electricity utilities in Bahrain, Iran, South Africa, and New Zealand. Following a time as Director of Engineering of a £200m turnover manufacturing company he returned to the energy industry in 1989 as Director of BP Energy and of other BP subsidiaries with involvement in a number of strategic activities across Europe. During his tenure at BP Energy, the company developed a reputation as one of the UK’s leading large industrial CHP and energy management companies, with the company doubling in size every year for four years. Since he established the Tanaris group in 1994, the group has been involved to varying degrees in a number of renewable energy, CHP and power generation projects, ranging in size from under 1 MWe to over 1000 MWe, working in association with a number of the UK, US and European power and energy companies.
He has a broad range of experience in energy and environmental issues which has included membership of various Government Agency and Trade body committees, panels and working parties with the Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Environment, HMIP, CBI, CHPA, and AEP. He was also previously a member of the UK Electricity Pool Development Group representing Independent Generators, and served on the joint Office of Electricity Regulation / DTI Development and Implementation Steering Group (DISG) for the New Electricity Trading Arrangements (NETA) in England and Wales (representing the interests of CHP and Renewable generation). He is currently a board member of the Combined Heat and Power Association, and past Chairman of the CHPA Developers Forum, a board member of the Association of Electricity Producers, and Chairman of the AEP Electricity Trading Committee. In addition, he is a member the Balancing and Settlement Code (BSC) Panel, the body established to oversee the electricity trading system in the UK. He was appointed to the original BSC Panel for England and Wales in 2000, prior to the inception of the new trading arrangements to represent the interests of CHP and Renewable energy, and was subsequently appointed to the revised BSC panel, extended to include Scotland under the British Electricity Transport and Trading Arrangements (BETTA) in the 2004 Energy Act.
